Corylus from the family Hazelnut and birch (beech-tree-Betulaceae) genus can both be used as the name of the plant.. There are many species such as American Hazelnut, Adifındık, Wood Hazelnut, Chinese Hazelnut, California Hazelnut, Caucasian Hazelnut, Beak Hazelnut, Lambert Hazelnut, Japanese Hazelnut. Our country is the country that produces the most in terms of hazelnut production. In addition, the hazelnuts produced are the world's highest quality hazelnuts. The Black Sea region provides 80% of the nuts produced in Turkey. It is also produced in the Marmara region. Approximately 64% of the world's production is met by our country, this is a very serious rate and the fruit of the hazelnut, tree, bark are highly in demand in the domestic market. According to 2015 data Turkey is the foremost hazelnut producer with an annual production volume of 646.000 tons.Its nearest competitor Italy has been able to produce 125,000 tons of hazelnut. In other words, our country has produced 4 times more than its closest competitor. In recent years; on behalf of the proliferation of the world’s hazelnut production alternatives Turkey is no longer the leaderin the hazelnut market. However, according to the general opinion, the oil and moisture content of the same type of hazelnuts produced in Georgia, Armenia and other regions is not as good as the content of the hazelnuts grown in our country. For this reason, hazelnut must become a country issue.

In Which Areas Is Hazelnut Used?

The inside part of the hazelnut fruit is consumed as a snack, hazelnut paste, biscuits, sweets, cakes, ice cream. The hazelnuts, which are evaluated in lower quality, are used in the production of hazelnut oil.

Hazelnut oil is used during refining process and as edible oil. It is also used as industrial oil for various purposes and in medical disinfecting processes. The remaining pulp is used in feed and fertilizer production.

The shells of the hazelnuts are used as fuel. In addition, these shells can also be used for making contralite and plywood, which are wood materials obtained from some types of compressed wood. In addition, by burning half of these shells, materials such as activated charcoal and briquette coal are produced. The sheets covering the leaf and shell are used for fertilizer production. The fertilizers obtained are evaluated again in the hazelnut gardens.
